Letter, 12 June 1863.

The collection consists of one letter from an unknown soldier to his daughter Louise, dated 12 June 1863. In it he describes the celebration that he and his fellow soldiers had for the 85th Indiana troops who returned after their release from Libby Prison.

The 85th Indiana Infantry was organized on 2 September 1862 in Terre Haute, Indiana. In March of 1863 the unit engaged Confederate troops at the Battle of Thompson's Station in Tennessee. The Union forces surrendered and most of the troops of the 85th were captured and sent to Libby Prison.
